Finance Analyst, Strategic Planning

The position. Root Insurance is looking for a perceptive and thorough analyst with a background in corporate finance, consumer unit economics, and complex financial analysis. As a key contributor to the financial forecasting process, you will execute processes and implement improvements to deliver a trusted source of truth for the organization. The financial model forecasts the expected business results for the complex entity structure within Root in financial statement format to inform capital management decisions. The lifetime value model evaluates unit economics to drive customer acquisition strategies. The right person will possess superb quantitative skills and work with attention to detail in building a robust and dynamic forecast. This individual will be comfortable working with the uncertainty that comes with working in a rapidly evolving and scaling business.

What you'll do.

  • Deeply understand, maintain, and improve complex financial models using GAAP and STAT modeling to determine capital needs and evaluate unit economics, while maintaining detailed changelog and performing variance analysis to explain changes
  • Relentlessly pursue errors, add additional tests and checks, and reduce uncertainty in forecasts while troubleshooting issues with accounting, finance, and product experts
  • Develop and execute operational processes to actualize financial forecasts on a monthly cadence, socialize forecast outputs with business units, and engage with engineering and finance systems teams to automate processes
  • Execute reproducible scenario and sensitivity analyses on key drivers of growth, profit, and capital to inform decision-making and communicate results in presentations for executive and investor audiences
  • Support management and investor diligence requests with clear explanations of drivers and changes
  • Develop an understanding of existing reinsurance contracts and improve ability to accurately forecast reinsurance cash flows under new arrangements
  • Maintain a close relationship with accounting counterparts to evaluate and implement evolving accounting policies into the forecasting process
  • Interface with technical lead to ensure historical data quality
  • Support evolving capital strategy through scenario testing and implementation of complex legal entity structures and associated financial statements into models
  • 1-3 years of experience in quantitative or financial analysis
  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business or a related quantitative field
  • Highly analytical, with proven ability in data-intensive financial analysis backed by strong financial modeling skills in Excel, experience maintaining complex driver-based financial forecast with fully integrated financial statements for corporate entity or otherwise complex business structure
  • Proficiency with financial statement analysis and forecasting, including a basic understanding of GAAP and Statutory Accounting principles and ability to communicate with experts
  • Great attention to detail, self-driven
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Approaches problem solving with natural intellectual curiosity, open-mindedness, and comfort with ambiguity
  • Proven ability to execute on projects quickly; get things done mentality
  • Experience writing SQL queries and an understanding of data warehouse structures is a plus
